Bristol is marking 20 years of twinning success with Tbilisi in a year of celebrations after receiving a £10,000 lottery grant. The project is one of six in Bristol and 64 in the South West to share £450,211 in the latest round of the Lottery’s Awards for All programme, announced today.

To mark 20 years of being twinned with Georgia’s capital, the Bristol Tbilisi Association is holding a series of events to celebrate its long success. The activities are aimed at helping residents learn more about Georgian culture through Georgian music and dance performances, workshops and a photography exhibition.

Alex Hughes, BITA coordinator on behalf of the Bristol Tbilisi Association, said: “This year is going to be filled with events celebrating our twinning with the Georgian capital and its traditions that survived Soviet rule. A Georgian choir and dance company will lead workshops and perform in schools and at the Harbour Festival. Children will also learn to paint in the style of its most famous artist, Niko Pirosmanishvili.

“Georgia has changed a lot since it twinned with us in 1988, and to reflect that, we have kicked things off with a photographic exhibition at the Grant Bradley Gallery entitled From Communism to Capitalism running until 23 February and will feature a talk by the photographer, Peter Nasmyth on the final day. In October, we will be hosting a Georgian film festival, which will include talks by two directors, and the annual Georgian Studies Day Conference.”

Other grants go to Avon Club For Young People, who will use the £5,480 award to set up and run a pool league for young people in the Lawrence Weston area and to May Park Primary School, who will use their £10,000 grant to install specialist play equipment in their nursery garden. A grant of £4,500 goes to 17th Bristol Scout Group to replace the roof of the scout hall, while £9,600 goes to Tyndale Circle Day Centre to run weekly art sessions including poetry, music and visual arts for people with dementia and their families. Bristol Avon Sailing Club is to use its £9,200 grant to extend its current training facilities for local youth groups and the wider community.

Awards for All is the small grants scheme administered by the Big Lottery Fund on behalf of Lottery good cause funders, Arts Council England, Big Lottery Fund, Heritage Lottery Fund and Sport England. The scheme makes awards of between £300 and £10,000 to grass-roots community groups and voluntary organisations.

Mark Cotton, Big Lottery Fund Head of Region for the South West, said on behalf of the Awards for All funders: “This year has got off to a great start for community groups with over £338,000 in grants being distributed by Awards for All. We are proud to be able to help groups keep up their wonderful work in bringing communities together.”
