A celebration of the Bristol Aircraft Corporation’ s 100th anniversary, a chance for children with learning disabilities to go surfing in Plymouth, and a mobile food shop in Exeter are among the projects set to benefit from grants in the Lottery’s Awards for All programme, announced today. A total of £459,386 is being distributed to 69 groups across the South West in the latest round of awards.
Awards for All is the small grants scheme administered by the Big Lottery Fund on behalf of Lottery good cause funders, Arts Council England, Big Lottery Fund, Heritage Lottery Fund and Sport England. The scheme makes awards of between £300 and £10,000 to grass-roots community groups and voluntary organisations.
Mark Cotton, Big Lottery Fund Head of the South West region, said on behalf of Awards for All: “This month’s awards really celebrate the diversity of the South West with history projects, children’s groups and healthy living schemes forming a part of 69 terrific projects that help support people of all ages and backgrounds. With close to half a million pounds shared out in this round of Lottery grants countless people will really benefit.”
Filton Community History will receive £10,000 to celebrate the Bristol Aircraft Corporation’s 100th anniversary. The group will use the award to piece together a detailed oral history in celebration of the centenary in 2010. With interviews from countless locals and former aviation workers it is hoped the activity will provide a lasting memory of the times for future generations. The once-sleepy village of Filton played a central role in the First World War and also became home to some of the world’s most famous aeroplanes. From September the group will spend eight months recording memories and gathering images that will form part of a wide-ranging exhibition marking the BAC’s 100th anniversary in 2010.
Lifeworks will spend £8,296 on staging a free family fun day called ‘Breaking the Barrier’ on Saturday 13 September at Bigbury On Sea. Specially trained instructors will help give children with autism and learning disabilities the chance to surf and enjoy a fun-filled day with their families. The event will also feature a barbecue, music and a sand castle competition. Lifeworks put on a similar event in 2007 and have been inundated with calls to host another from all over the United Kingdom.
Love Local Food receives the £10,000 to launch a mobile food shop and education centre featuring locally produced foodstuffs. The scheme is the brainchild of local food producers and educators based at West Town Farm in Ide and Shillingford Organics. The shop will sell fresh meat, vegetables, bread and fair trade produce two days a week for the next three months to support local farmers and help get Exeter healthy.
Other grants made in this round of awards include: Kinson Primary School in Bournemouth, who receive £3,194 to transform an overgrown area into a sensory learning garden; and Trees for Health in Devon, awarded £3,000 to manage woodlands sustainably.
