Safeguarding the future of a coast watch initiative in Cornwall, workshops in jazz and funk music in Devon and a series of lectures staged by a photographic society in Bristol are among the projects set to benefit from grants from the Lottery’s Awards for All programme, announced today.
A total of £457,114 is being distributed to 69 groups across the South West in the latest round of awards.
Awards for All is the small grants scheme administered by the Big Lottery Fund on behalf of Lottery good cause funders, Arts Council England, Big Lottery Fund, Heritage Lottery Fund and Sport England. The scheme makes awards of between £300 and £10,000 to grass-roots community groups and voluntary organisations.
Mark Cotton, Big Lottery Fund Head of the South West region, speaking on behalf of Awards for All said: “What a wonderful variety of projects have benefited from this month’s Awards for All funding. Across the South West, 69 different projects received funds totalling close to half a million pounds.”
National Coastguard Institution Penzance will use a £3,455 grant to refurbish a watch station and increase its number of watch keepers, ensuring the safety of sea users around the Mounts Bay and Newlyn areas. The watch is one of 36 operational stations around the country and is made up of forty volunteers sharing regular AM and PM shifts seven days a week. The group plays a crucial role in sea safety, reporting incidents directly to Falmouth Coastguard and its emergency response teams.
The Music Performance Education Group will receive £9,050 to run workshops in jazz, funk and African music for up to sixty people, before staging a showcase concert on 12 July in St Cuthbert Mayne School, Torquay. The concert, due to start at 7.30pm, will feature renowned jazz pianist Mike Westbrook playing alongside the group’s students. The Music Performance Education Group (MUSICPEG) is a not for profit organisation committed to providing opportunities for musicians of all ages to develop their musical performance skills.
Kingswood Photographic Society has secured a £5,270 grant to mark its 60th anniversary with a series of free summer lectures on a wide range of topics including composition, lighting, and camera phones. The group will also be able to purchase equipment such as an Apple Mac computer, software programmes and a high definition screen for image display. Established in 1948, the Society’s 70 members meet weekly on Friday evenings to discuss and share photography skills.
Other grants made in this round of awards include Bournemouth Taekwondo Club, which secured £6,550 to run more courses for the community, and Clevedon Canoe Club in North Somerset, awarded £10,000 to purchase new equipment and improve facilities.
