Starbucks in Bristol celebrate commitment to ethical purchasing with ‘Good Coffee Day’
Starbucks in Bristol is celebrating its commitment to ethical coffee purchasing with “Good Coffee Day” on Wednesday 27th February 2008.
Starbucks will mark Good Coffee Day by offering a complimentary Tall cup of Freshly Brewed Café Estima Blend™ Fair Trade certified coffee to every customer from 2pm until close of business. Starbucks customers will be celebrating Good Coffee Day in Starbucks coffee houses across the country.
During the day each coffee master (Starbucks partners, designated by their black aprons, who go through rigorous training to become in-store coffee experts) will hold a coffee seminar where customers are invited to try a range of coffees from different places around the globe and pair them with complimentary foods. For example, Latin American coffees go well with nuts and cocoa, which bring out their slightly nutty and sometimes spicy characteristics, and Asia Pacific coffees compliment savoury foods such as Brie cheese.
Starbucks has always been committed to purchasing coffee in an ethical and socially responsible way, and Good Coffee Day is a chance for customers to learn more about Starbucks ethical purchasing approach whilst enjoying a great cup of Fair Trade coffee.
Starbucks and the Fair Trade movement share a common goal: to ensure that farmers receive a fair price for their coffee and help to improve their farms for the future. Starbucks buys Fair Trade certified coffee because it benefits small-scale coffee farmers organised into cooperatives and is part of Starbucks larger, integrated approach to sustainable coffee sourcing.
In addition to offering certified Fair Trade, organic and conservation (shade grown) coffees, Starbucks encourages coffee cooperatives, farms and supply networks of all sizes and scale to participate in C.A.F.E. Practices (Coffee and Farmer Equity Practices). This is an incentive-based performance system that provides purchasing preference to coffee suppliers that provide green coffee grown, processed and traded in an environmentally, socially and economically responsible way.
C.A.F.E. Practices is an independently-verified programme built on a model of continuous improvement designed to help coffee producers monitor their sustainability progress and continuously improve their practices.
Phil Broad, managing director, Starbucks UK & Ireland added: "Starbucks has always cared passionately about coffee and the people who grow it and this is a great way for customers to learn more about our approach to ethical coffee buying. Good Coffee Day is also a great opportunity for us to share our passion for coffee with our customers.”
