Atlas Genetics Secures £2m

South West Ventures Fund and Finance South West Growth Fund have led a £2.1m further funding round in the Bath-based company Atlas Genetics, which is developing the point of care Velox™ system – a portable molecular diagnostic platform which gives clinicians laboratory-quality results in less than 30 minutes, allowing doctors to test and treat a patient within a single visit or to have a specific diagnosis in an emergency situation.

The company, formed in 2005 as a spin-out from Bath University, has raised the additional funds to conduct a clinical evaluation for the detection of Group B Streptococcus in pregnant women, an infection which can lead to life-threatening sepsis and meningitis in neo-natal children.

Digital VisitorDigital Visitor Turns Its Cameras On Heritage Site

Online video marketing company Digital Visitor has completed its first project for the National Trust, a two-and-a-half minute video promoting Quarry Bank Mill and Styal Estate in Cheshire, one of the country’s premier industrial heritage sites.

The launch of the video was timed to coincide with the opening for the 2008 season of the ‘Secret Garden’, the picturesque valley retreat which once belonged to the mill owner.

Jane Watson, Marketing Manager at National Trust North West, said: “The opening of a new garden at Quarry Bank Mill was an ideal new product on which to test this and we're thrilled with the results. We hope this will translate into more visitors, and we're exploring similar videos for other properties over the next few months'.

Starbucks Helps Children Embrace Literacy

Starbucks is celebrating another successful chapter of its Bookdrive, a programme run in partnership with the National Literacy Trust to promote literacy in young people.

In total, 221,368 books have been collected across the UK and Ireland – over 100,000 more than the target set, and over 120,000 more than were collected in the 2006 campaign. The new or nearly new books, donated by customers, are given to schools and either shared amongst the children through their library or given out to them to take home.

The average primary school library in the UK spends £10.25 per head on books per year so the injection of books from Starbucks coffee houses throughout the UK will have a major impact in terms of volumes of books.

The Mystery Of The Missing Devon EuroMillions
Winner Is Left Unsolved!

A EuroMillions prize of £6,989,367.40 has gone unclaimed in the County of Devon. The ticket expired on 26th March and no-one came forward to claim the huge amount.

The hunt continued for the winner right up until the 5.30pm deadline on the 26th. The final hunt took place at Smugglers Cove where pirates searched for clues which could have taken them to the hidden treasure – the owner of the winning ticket!

The prize money, plus all the interest it has generated, will now go to the Good Causes Fund – adding to the £20 billion already raised.

Extra Shot Of Coffee Expertise

Naomi Cable has secured the ‘cream of positions’ in the South West, becoming the Starbucks regional coffee master representing the area in 2008.

Her remit is quite simply the envy of all coffee-lovers: to enjoy it, talk about it, find foods that match it, and travel throughout the South West speaking to people about it, promoting a better understanding and appreciation of coffee.

Naomi was awarded the prestigious title after successfully competing against 1200 of the company’s coffee masters (Starbucks partners, designated by their black aprons, who go through rigorous training to become in-store coffee experts) in the Coffee Ambassador’s challenge.
