Celebrity gossip and PR disasters!
27.06.2007
This week I’ve been intrigued by the cut-throat world of celebrity gossip and PR disasters! It’s been a week for celebrity PR blunders! BBC Newslonline revealed that actress Cameron Diaz has made a formal apology for carrying a bag in Peru which featured a political slogan likely to be considered offensive by local people. Whilst visiting the historical Machu Picchu site, the Shrek star wore a green bag which had a red star and the words "serve the people" printed in Chinese. Diaz admitted she did not realise the slogan's "potentially hurtful nature". Thankfully her PR advisor acted immediately and a press statement was issued to the Associated Press: "I sincerely apologise to anyone I may have inadvertently offended. I'm sorry for any people's pain and suffering, and it was certainly never my intention to reopen what I now know is a painful wound in this country's history."
Meanwhile Kerry Katona has accused her ex-husband, former Westlife star Brian Mcfadden of using his kids to boost his PR. The ex-Atomic Kitten singer has criticised McFadden for launching another bid for custody of the couple’s children Molly, five, and Lilly-Sue, four insisting the move is nothing more than a publicity stunt. She says: "It’s a shame Brian is so desperate that he has to use me and the children for coverage."
And as everyone knows, there’s been a bitter media bidding war for an exclusive celebrity interview over the last few weeks. And, CNN's Larry King has secured THE American scoop of the century, an interview with jailed celebrity heiress Paris Hilton today. The announcement follows a battle between rivals ABC and NBC over who would secure an interview. CNN said she would not be paid for the appearance. Quoting unidentified sources, the New York Post said NBC News had agreed to pay up to $1m (£500,000) for an exclusive interview with Ms Hilton.
Personally it’s not an interview or a story of much interest to me, but the media scrum has been fascinating to watch. Who was it who was it who said 'any pr is good PR'! In Paris’s case she has increased her media column inches throughout the globe, her fan base has remained loyal and she now reaps the reward of a substantial payout from the media for this interview. What is the world coming to!
